The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda may be postponed until 2028 due to growing concerns about whether the three East African countries will be fully prepared to stage the continent’s premier football tournament on schedule.
Reports from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) indicate that infrastructure challenges including the readiness of stadiums and supporting facilities in multiple host cities have raised doubts about meeting CAF’s standards for a 24-team finals. The CAF Executive Committee is set to discuss the issue at its upcoming meeting in Dar es Salaam, where postponement proposals will be considered.
The potential delay comes as a broader restructuring of African football is underway, including AFCON’s shift to a four-year cycle from 2028, a move aimed at aligning the calendar with global competitions and reducing scheduling pressure on players and leagues.
While CAF president Patrice Motsepe previously expressed confidence that the 2027 tournament would proceed as planned, the latest assessments and debates reflect ongoing logistical and organizational concerns among stakeholders
