Kisumu, Kenya – A heartbreaking bus accident in Kisumu County on Friday, August 8, 2025, claimed the lives of 25 people, leaving the community in shock, while miraculously sparing a seven-month-old infant who was thrown from the vehicle during the crash.
The bus, operated by AIC Naki Secondary School, was transporting mourners returning from a funeral in Kakamega when it lost control at the Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at high speed before veering off the road and overturning into a ditch. The devastating collision left 10 men, 10 women, and a 10-year-old girl dead. Four additional victims later succumbed to injuries at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
In a remarkable twist, a seven-month-old baby, identified as Innocent Brighten, survived the crash without a scratch. A video of the infant playing beside his mother in a hospital bed quickly went viral, sparking social media discussions about the child’s miraculous survival. “It’s unbelievable,” said one witness. “Everyone thought the baby wouldn’t make it. Seeing him alive is a miracle.”
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) have launched investigations into the crash. Preliminary reports indicated that speeding may have contributed to the accident. Authorities are reviewing road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Hospital staff at JOOTRH worked tirelessly to stabilize survivors, including the baby’s mother, who sustained minor injuries. Medical teams continue to provide care and support to the affected families.
The Kisumu bus tragedy sparked nationwide conversations about road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws. While the community mourns the victims, the survival of Innocent Brighten offers a rare moment of hope amid the sorrow.
