Rain or shine, thousands of Ugandans celebrated Afrigo Band’s golden jubilee at a Stanbic-sponsored concert, featuring legendary Kofi Olomide and unforgettable live performances. Fans danced to classic hits while fireworks and a commemorative book launch capped off a night of music, culture, and national pride.
Thousands of Ugandans defied rain and crowds flocked to Kampala to celebrate Afrigo Band’s golden jubilee in spectacular style. The Stanbic-sponsored concert honored five decades of Uganda’s most iconic band, bringing together fans across generations for an unforgettable night of music and culture.
The highlight of the evening was Congolese music legend Kofi Olomide, whose energetic Ndombolo performances sent the audience into a frenzy. Lois Kwikiriza, Brand and Marketing Manager at Stanbic Bank Uganda, praised Ugandans’ dedication: “Despite the downpour, fans, sponsors, and supporters showed unwavering love for Afrigo and Ugandan music.”
The concert kicked off with Abeka Band performing the Buganda Kingdom anthem, followed by timeless Ugandan classics from Mesach Semakula, Sweet Kid, Henry Tigan, and Betty Mpologoma. Afrigo Band veterans Moses Matovu, Rachel Magoola, and Joanita Kawalya then took the stage, performing hits like Batuuse, Jim, Teri Mubi, Emaali, Olumbe Lw’Obwavu, and Obangaina, with fans dancing and singing along. Flexipay and Uganda Breweries ensured the crowd enjoyed the music with discounted beverages.
Kofi Olomide’s performance, featuring hits like Papa Mobimba, Senga, Effrakata, and Ekotite, ignited the crowd, creating moments of pure musical ecstasy. The night concluded with a five-minute fireworks display and the launch of the Afrigo at 50 Commemorative Book, presided over by Prince David Wassajja representing the Kabaka of Buganda, alongside Hon. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission.
Prince Wassajja delivered the Kabaka’s message of pride in Afrigo’s enduring contribution to Uganda’s music scene, emphasizing the cultural significance of the band’s legacy. Ali Allybai, CEO of Talent Africa Group, described the concert as a historic celebration of resilience, culture, and timeless music, promising more spectacular shows to come.
