Algeria and Russia are strengthening their economic ties through a promising new chapter of cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector. In a recent meeting held at the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry in Algiers, Algerian Minister Ouacim Kouidri welcomed Alexey Repik, Chairman of the Russian business association “Business Russia,” to explore joint investment opportunities and industrial collaboration. Also present was Kamel Moula, President of the Algerian Council for Economic Renewal (CREA), underscoring the strategic importance both nations place on this emerging partnership.
Minister Kouidri highlighted Algeria’s recent progress in pharmaceutical and medical device production, noting the country’s commitment to reducing its dependence on imported medicines. Algeria has implemented a series of reforms aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, encouraging innovation, and aligning production with national healthcare priorities. These efforts have created a favorable environment for foreign investment, particularly from partners like Russia, which has a growing pharmaceutical industry and a strong interest in expanding its global reach.
The discussions focused on several key areas of collaboration, including technology transfer, joint ventures, and the establishment of pharmaceutical production facilities within Algeria. Both sides expressed a shared vision of leveraging their respective strengths to meet local and regional healthcare needs, while also exploring opportunities to export jointly produced medicines. This initiative aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy of industrial diversification and economic resilience, as the country seeks to build a more self-sufficient and innovation-driven economy.
By engaging with Russia, Algeria is also signaling a shift toward more diversified international partnerships, moving beyond traditional Western alliances to embrace emerging global players. The pharmaceutical sector, with its potential for high-impact innovation, job creation, and public health benefits, stands as a cornerstone of this strategy. As talks progress, the partnership between Algeria and Russia could pave the way for a new era of industrial cooperation, reinforcing both nations’ commitment to sustainable development and mutual economic growth.
