A new chapter in maritime connectivity has begun in the Comoros with the launch of a Ro-Pax ferry service, the first of its kind in the island nation. Spearheaded by Serdal International, a joint venture between AD Ports Group and Resources Investment, the service was inaugurated in a high-profile ceremony on Anjouan island, attended by Comoros President Azali Assoumani and UAE Ambassador Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure and stimulate regional integration.
The newly introduced vessel, Yameela, is designed to carry both passengers and vehicles, a capability that has long been absent in the region’s maritime offerings. With a capacity of 190 passengers and 45 vehicles, the ferry promises a comfortable and efficient travel experience, featuring air-conditioned seating and modern safety standards. It will operate between the Port of Moroni on Grande Comore and Mutsamudu on Anjouan, two of the most vital hubs in the archipelago. This route is expected to dramatically improve mobility for residents, enhance tourism, and facilitate trade between the islands.
Managed by AD Ports Group’s Noatum Maritime, the service is part of a broader strategy to unlock economic potential across East Africa. By offering reliable, affordable, and safe transport, the ferry is poised to improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education, while also attracting investment and boosting local commerce. The project reflects a growing recognition of the role that maritime infrastructure plays in national development, especially for island nations where connectivity is a cornerstone of progress.
The launch of the Ro-Pax ferry service is more than a logistical upgrade, it is a symbol of ambition and collaboration. It underscores the importance of international partnerships in driving sustainable development and highlights the Comoros’ commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. As the Yameela begins its journey across the waters of the Indian Ocean, it carries with it the promise of a more connected, prosperous future for the Comorian people.
