Kotido, Uganda – Efforts to restore lasting peace in Karamoja have gained fresh momentum as the Joint Security Forces step up disarmament operations in Kotido District. The multi-agency team comprising the Uganda Police Force (UPF), Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), local leaders, and community representatives is working to curb armed raids that continue to destabilize parts of the region.
Although some areas of Karamoja are relatively calm, districts like Kotido and Kaabong still face sporadic attacks. Just last week, suspected armed warriors raided Mutunan gold mining camp in Timu Sub County, Kaabong District, leaving one person dead and several others injured. These incidents have reinforced the urgency of renewed security and community engagement.
At Lokomebu Trading Centre in Kotido Sub County, security officials launched community policing sessions aimed at rebuilding trust and encouraging voluntary disarmament. Residents were urged to surrender illegal firearms and cooperate with authorities to help stop violent raids.
Mt Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, Mike Longole, emphasized that the government has exhausted peaceful avenues of persuasion, yet some individuals persist in keeping illegal weapons. “Those found in possession of illegal guns will face the law. Security is a shared responsibility, and timely information sharing is critical,” he cautioned.
The joint forces have also deployed intelligence teams to trace individuals concealing firearms and undermining peace initiatives. At the same time, leaders appealed for calm, reminding communities that disarmament is not about punishment but about safeguarding livelihoods and securing future development.
“The Joint Security Forces remain committed to ensuring the safety of all residents. We call upon the public to take advantage of ongoing peace initiatives and hand over any illegal firearms. Together, we can restore stability and end the cycle of violence,” Longole said.
The renewed operations in Kotido highlight the government’s broader strategy to promote peace, strengthen community-police relations, and pave the way for lasting stability in Karamoja. With continued cooperation between citizens and security forces, hopes are high that the region can overcome insecurity and focus on development.
Takeaway:
Peace in Karamoja can only be achieved through joint responsibility. Residents, leaders, and security forces must work hand in hand to end gun violence, promote trust, and secure a safer future for the region.
