KINSHASA — Former President Joseph Kabila has officially announced his return to frontline politics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), pledging to restore peace, prosperity, and state authority amid growing national challenges. In a written statement addressed to the Congolese people, Kabila emphasized that his 2019 departure from power was a constitutional pause not the end of his political journey.

Kabila, who governed Africa’s second-largest country from 2001 to 2019, expressed deep concern over the country’s current state, citing unfulfilled promises, increased divisions, and rising hardships since he left office. “Those who replaced me have not brought peace or prosperity. I cannot remain a mere spectator,” he declared, signaling his intent to reengage actively in national affairs.

He reaffirmed his commitment to defending the Congolese people, protecting national resources, and ensuring that the country’s wealth benefits future generations. “I am coming back because Congo is in danger, and because I have the experience and the strength necessary to save it,” Kabila stated, directly addressing critics who accuse him of seeking to reclaim power.

Kabila’s political comeback comes amid ongoing legal challenges. Earlier this year, the government of President Félix Tshisekedi charged him with treason, accusing him of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has seized territory in North Kivu. Kabila denies these allegations, calling them politically motivated efforts to marginalize him ahead of the 2028 elections.

The legal proceedings add a tense backdrop to Kabila’s return as President Tshisekedi, re-elected in 2023, is constitutionally barred from running for a third term. This development opens the door for a competitive political landscape leading up to the 2028 general elections, with Kabila’s declaration expected to intensify jockeying among political factions.

Kabila urged Congolese citizens to unite and prepare for a collective effort to reclaim the nation’s destiny, promising to withstand criticism and threats. His Common Front for Congo (FCC) remains a formidable presence in parliament, and his return could revive old political alliances and rivalries, significantly reshaping the country’s political dynamics.

Analysts warn that Kabila’s re-entry might heighten tensions but could also invigorate opposition groups amid widespread public frustration over insecurity in eastern Congo and economic difficulties. As Kabila concluded, “I am coming back. And I will remain until the people regain the dignity that is due to them.”

This announcement marks a pivotal moment for the DRC’s future, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest in the coming years.
