The 2nd National Vice Chairperson post is the most influential female role in the NRM hierarchy, drawing two of Uganda’s most prominent women into a head-to-head contest. Kadaga, who has served in the role since 2021 after losing the Speakership to Jacob Oulanyah, now faces Among, who ascended to Parliament Speaker in 2022 following Oulanyah’s death.

The campaign trail has already seen tension flare. Kadaga, speaking in Mpigi district, criticized Among over international travel sanctions linked to alleged corruption, questioning her suitability for the CEC seat.

In response, Among maintained a composed stance, emphasizing respect for her predecessor and declining to engage in personal attacks. Speaking in Busoga, Kadaga’s stronghold, she highlighted continuity in regional representation and urged supporters to embrace party unity. Among’s campaign was supported by her husband, FUFA President Moses Magogo, who hails from the region.

The rivalry traces back to Kadaga’s 2021 loss of the Speakership to Oulanyah, signaling the start of tensions with Among. Since then, Among has consolidated power in Parliament, while Kadaga has maintained a strong foothold in NRM leadership, ensuring both remain politically formidable.

Analysts note that the election will test the NRM’s ability to manage internal rivalries. Kadaga commands loyalty in Busoga and among long-serving party cadres, while Among leverages her parliamentary influence and close ties to President Museveni’s inner circle. “Both women are politically formidable. The challenge for NRM is ensuring this contest does not deepen factionalism ahead of 2026,” observed one political analyst.

The endorsed candidates list, which also includes regional vice chairpersons, will move to the National Executive Council and then to the National Conference for final approval. The NRM’s 4th National Conference is scheduled for August 27–28, 2025, at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.
