The 2025 Uganda Open teed off today with the Seniors edition at the newly rebranded Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club, and all eyes are on defending champion Steven Katwiremu. With nearly 40 years of golfing experience, Katwiremu remains unfazed, sticking to his trademark composure as he seeks back-to-back victories.

Katwiremu, who lifted the Seniors trophy last year, believes there’s no need for elaborate adjustments despite the challenges posed by the par-71 Lugazi course famous for its rolling hills and tricky valleys.
“My plan is simple tee off and play the course as it lies,” he said confidently. “The course challenges everyone equally, so excuses don’t count.”

He tees off at 11:50 a.m. alongside Uganda Seniors Golfers Association chairman David Balaka and Sam Onek, in what promises to be one of the day’s most closely followed groups.

The competition is packed with seasoned names, including former Uganda Golf Union president George Egaddu, who headlines the final group with Robert Lim Lim and Charles Katarikawe. The opening three-ball features left-hander William Mutyaba, Michael Cleave, and Charles Kagombe, setting the pace for what is expected to be a fiercely contested tournament.

The women’s field is equally competitive, with nine golfers in action. Defending champion Edrae Kagombe, who triumphed last year at Entebbe, will fight to retain her crown against Monica Ntege, Katy Kabenge, and Rose Azuba.

This year’s Seniors Open not only kicks off the Uganda Open series but also marks the first time the championship is being staged at Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club, formerly Mehta Golf Club. The event will roll on with the Ladies Open, Amateur contests, and climax with the Professionals Open.

As the fairways come alive, the spotlight is firmly on Katwiremu. Can the veteran golfer’s calm strategy deliver him another crown, or will new challengers rise to steal the spotlight?
