Kenyan marathon star Albert Korir, winner of the 2021 New York City Marathon, has been handed a five-year ban after admitting to the use of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance. The sanction marks a significant blow to the athlete’s career and adds to growing concerns within the sport.
According to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), Korir tested positive for synthetic EPO during an out-of-competition test conducted in Kenya in October 2025. He received a one-year reduction from an initial six-year ban after promptly admitting the violation, in line with anti-doping regulations. His suspension will run from 8 January 2026 to 7 January 2031.
The case represents another setback for Kenyan athletics, which has faced increasing scrutiny over recurring doping violations in recent years. Analysts say the incident underscores the need for stronger enforcement, education, and accountability measures to protect the integrity of the sport.
