His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini, in his role as the incoming Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation, issued a formal statement commending the peaceful and orderly conduct of Malawi’s 2025 General Election. Held on 16 September, the election saw Malawians cast their votes for the President, Members of Parliament, and Local Government Councillors. The King praised the democratic maturity demonstrated by the citizens of Malawi, highlighting their commitment to upholding constitutional values and the rule of law throughout the electoral process.
He acknowledged the critical role played by the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM), which monitored the pre-election environment, polling day activities, and post-election developments. Their presence, he noted, contributed to transparency and credibility, reinforcing the region’s shared commitment to democratic governance. King Mswati III also lauded the leadership and statesmanship of outgoing President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who graciously congratulated President-elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika even before the final results were officially announced. This gesture, the King emphasized, was a powerful affirmation of respect for the will of the people and a testament to Malawi’s democratic resilience.
The statement underscored the importance of peaceful transitions of power in strengthening regional stability and fostering unity among SADC member states. King Mswati III reaffirmed the organization’s continued support for Malawi’s development and its efforts to build inclusive, accountable institutions. As the region faces evolving political and security challenges, the King’s message served as a reminder of the enduring value of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect in advancing the collective aspirations of Southern Africa.
