Morocco and Kenya are looking to strengthen their bilateral ties by establishing a parliamentary friendship group.

In a meeting in Nairobi, Morocco’s Ambassador to Kenya and South Sudan, Abderrazzak Laassel, and Kenyan Senate Speaker Amason Kingi Jeffah discussed ways to enhance parliamentary collaboration between the two nations.

The officials agreed to form the Morocco-Kenya parliamentary friendship group, which will facilitate ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the countries’ legislative bodies. The initiative aims to deepen bilateral relations by fostering consistent communication among parliamentarians.

Beyond parliamentary diplomacy, the group also seeks to promote mutual understanding and support shared interests in areas such as trade, education, and development.

Both Morocco and Kenya view their cooperation as part of a long-term strategy to establish their partnership as a model for South-South cooperation, with a focus on African integration and sustainable development.

The meeting also laid the groundwork for expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, infrastructure, and agriculture.

The initiative reflects both nations' commitment to strengthening multi-sector cooperation, including in economic, commercial, cultural, and security domains.

Relations between the two countries have significantly grown following Kenya’s official endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as "the only sustainable approach" to resolving the Western Sahara dispute.

This shift became apparent after Kenya’s presidential election, with comments by Kenyan Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi during his May visit to Morocco solidifying this change. The visit marked a turning point in their bilateral relations, with both nations reaffirming their intention to deepen their strategic partnership.

Morocco and Kenya’s parliamentary cooperation now represents a tangible step toward closer ties, with benefits likely to extend beyond political dialogue into practical collaboration in critical development areas.
