Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services has officially declared an outbreak of mpox in the coastal city of Swakopmund, marking the country’s first confirmed case of the disease. The announcement, made on Sunday, October 19, 2025, follows the diagnosis of a patient who is currently receiving treatment in isolation at Swakopmund District Hospital. Health officials have confirmed that the individual is in stable condition, and preliminary investigations suggest the infection may be linked to cross-border travel within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, raising concerns about regional transmission and the need for coordinated containment efforts.

In response to the outbreak, the ministry has activated its national disease surveillance systems and deployed rapid response teams to conduct contact tracing and monitor potential cases. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a zoonotic viral disease caused by an orthopoxvirus. It is primarily transmitted through close human-to-human contact, including skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials. Symptoms typically include fever, rash, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, with most cases being mild but potentially severe in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

This development comes amid a broader surge in mpox cases across Africa, where nearly 200,000 infections and over 2,000 deaths have been reported since early 2024. With 29 countries affected, the outbreak has prompted urgent action from health authorities and international organizations, including the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Namibia’s declaration adds to the growing urgency to contain the virus and prevent it from escalating into a larger public health crisis, especially in regions with limited healthcare infrastructure and high mobility across borders.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, report any symptoms promptly, and adhere strictly to health guidelines issued by the ministry. Public awareness campaigns are being rolled out to educate communities about transmission risks and preventive measures. As containment efforts intensify, the situation in Swakopmund will serve as a critical test of Namibia’s public health preparedness and its ability to respond swiftly to emerging infectious threats. The government’s proactive stance reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of mpox within and beyond its borders.
