Machines are replacing human labour in industries.

Kampala, UgandaUganda’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, has issued a stark warning to Ugandans about the rising impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market. She urged workers, especially engineers and youth, to continuously upgrade their skills or risk being replaced by automation.

Speaking on September 15, 2025, Dr. Musenero highlighted that AI has the potential to transform economies but also disrupt existing professions. Citing a recent report from the World Economic Forum, she noted that while AI could displace an estimated 92 million jobs globally, it is also expected to create over 170 million new roles.

“Artificial intelligence will take your jobs if you remain stagnant,” Dr. Musenero said during a public address in Kampala. “If you sit around and make no effort to understand, master, develop, or take control of it, then AI can actually be damaging.”

She encouraged Ugandans to embrace AI technology by learning new skills, especially in digital fields, to remain competitive in the evolving job market. “Upgrade yourself. Don’t allow technology to stand above you. We were created to evolve, to change,” she added.

The Ugandan government has already taken steps toward integrating AI into the country’s development agenda. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has established an AI Studio aimed at fostering innovation and preparing the workforce for a digital future. These efforts are part of the broader National Development Plan (NDP IV), which emphasizes technology-driven growth.

Joining Dr. Musenero was Eng. Mustafa Shehu, President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, who stressed the importance of African governments supporting local innovators. “Innovation must be nurtured with policies that encourage local talents and provide resources,” he said.

Experts say the key to thriving in the AI era lies in continuous learning and adaptation. This includes strengthening STEM education, creating accessible training programs, and supporting startups that develop AI solutions tailored to African challenges.

The message is clear: AI presents both opportunities and risks. Ugandans must prepare to leverage technology to create jobs and improve livelihoods rather than fall victim to automation’s disruptions.
