Rabat – The National Foundation of Museums (FNM) has announced the appointment of art historian and curator Nadia Sabri as the new Director of the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI). Sabri takes over from Abdelaziz El Idrissi as part of the foundation’s administrative restructuring.
A university professor and the president of AICA Morocco (the International Association of Art Critics), Sabri brings extensive experience to the role. The FNM stated that she will focus on expanding access to art for younger audiences, enhancing the museum’s collections, and enriching its exhibition programming both nationally and internationally. Since its inception, the MMVI has played a key role in shaping Morocco’s cultural scene, promoting contemporary art and fostering international cultural exchange.
As part of the changes, Abdelaziz El Idrissi, who has led the museum since its opening by King Mohammed VI in 2014, will now serve as Head of the Museums Department at the FNM. In this capacity, El Idrissi will oversee cultural programming, inventory and digitization projects, both permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as initiatives aimed at enhancing and promoting museum collections.
The FNM emphasized that this restructuring is part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and advancing Morocco’s broader museum development strategy.
In recent years, Morocco has been expanding its artistic and cultural landscape, striving to make art more accessible while positioning itself as a regional hub for creativity and heritage. Through new museums, restoration projects, and international partnerships, Morocco is cultivating a dynamic cultural ecosystem that blends tradition with modern artistic expression.
