The National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Executive Council (NEC) meets today at State House, Entebbe, in a pivotal session chaired by Party Chairman and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Delegates are set to discuss and approve proposals from the Central Executive Committee (CEC), including the formal endorsement of Museveni as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2026 elections.
The NEC’s decisions will be forwarded to the NRM’s 4th National Conference at Kololo Independence Grounds on August 27–28, where thousands of delegates are expected to ratify the resolutions. Alongside confirming Museveni’s candidature, the meeting will address key internal leadership positions, including the 1st and 2nd National Vice Chairpersons and six regional vice chairs. The most closely watched race is for the 2nd Vice Chairperson (female), featuring Speaker of Parliament Anita Among against former First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga.
Observers note that the leadership contests have already seen sharp exchanges, particularly over international sanctions involving Among, though she has emphasized a conciliatory approach, respecting party elders. The NEC meeting is viewed as critical for maintaining party unity as NRM prepares for what is expected to be one of Uganda’s most competitive election cycles since 1986.
With major decisions set for today, the outcome of the NEC session will not only shape internal party dynamics but also solidify the leadership structure and set the stage for NRM’s campaign strategies for the 2026 polls. Stakeholders and party supporters alike will be watching closely as resolutions are finalized and forwarded to the National Conference for ratification.
