Senegal and Mauritania have intensified their joint security efforts by launching coordinated river patrols along the Senegal River, a strategic waterway that forms part of their shared border. This latest operation, conducted between Bakel in Senegal and Gande in Mauritania, reflects a growing commitment to regional stability and cross-border cooperation in the face of mounting security threats. The patrols were carried out by the Bakel River section in collaboration with Mauritanian forces, reinforcing a pattern of regular bilateral maneuvers aimed at improving tactical coordination and deterring transnational criminal activity.

The river patrol follows a joint land operation conducted in September, which covered several localities near the Malian border and supported Senegal’s Operation Karangue. This campaign focuses on securing the eastern regions of Tambacounda and Kedougou, areas increasingly vulnerable to spillover violence from neighboring Mali. The rise in jihadist activity in western Mali has heightened concerns across the region, with armed groups targeting transport routes, kidnapping truck drivers, and threatening fuel supplies. These developments have prompted urgent responses from both Senegal and Mauritania, whose borderlands are at risk of infiltration and destabilization.

Military officials have emphasized that these joint patrols serve not only a tactical purpose but also a symbolic one, showcasing the strength of bilateral ties and shared resolve. The Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the Armed Forces (DIRPA) noted that the operations are designed to reassure local populations, enhance intelligence sharing, and maintain a visible security presence in vulnerable zones. By working together, the two nations aim to build a resilient framework capable of responding to evolving threats in the Sahel region.

This collaboration is part of a broader trend toward regional security integration in West Africa, where countries are increasingly pooling resources to confront common challenges. As instability in Mali continues to spill across borders, coordinated efforts like these are seen as essential to preserving peace and protecting communities. The success of the river patrols will likely influence future joint operations and shape the strategic posture of Senegal and Mauritania as they navigate a complex and shifting security landscape.
