South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs is investigating 813 suspected “marriages of convenience” in KwaZulu-Natal, where foreign nationals allegedly marry South Africans to gain legal residency or documentation. Provincial manager Cyril Mncwabe revealed the figures during a crime council meeting in Durban, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to enforce immigration laws.

In addition to the investigations, law enforcement carried out 148 operations targeting immigration violations, focusing on individuals and networks facilitating illegal entry and residency. Officials warned employers that hiring undocumented migrants could result in prosecution, reflecting a broader effort to address immigration-related challenges affecting the labor market and public services.

Immigration remains a sensitive issue in South Africa, shaping debates around jobs, security, and economic opportunities. Analysts note that these investigations reflect the government’s balancing act between maintaining national security and respecting the rights of migrants. Civil society organizations continue to call for fair, humane treatment of foreign nationals while addressing abuses such as fraudulent marriages.
