Tunisia’s landmark 120 MWp Kairouan Solar Photovoltaic Project is nearing completion, with construction progress reaching 82% as of September 2025. Located in Metbassta, within the Kairouan governorate, the project is being developed by AMEA Power under a Build-Own-Operate framework and stands as the first privately financed solar initiative in Tunisia to reach financial close under the concession regime. With an investment of $86 million and support from major financial institutions including the International Finance Corporation and the African Development Bank, the project marks a pivotal step in Tunisia’s transition toward sustainable energy.
Once operational by the end of 2025, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 222 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, enough to power more than 43,000 households. It will also offset around 117,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, contributing significantly to Tunisia’s climate goals. Spanning 200 hectares, the facility will house over 220,000 solar modules and 16 inverters, reflecting both technological sophistication and large-scale ambition. The energy produced will be sold to the Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz under a 20-year power purchase agreement, reinforcing the country’s commitment to reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and enhancing energy security.
The Kairouan Solar PV Project is the first in a broader national program aimed at developing five solar plants totaling 500 MW across key regions including Tataouine, Gafsa, Tozeur, and Sidi Bouzid. This strategic initiative positions Tunisia as a regional leader in renewable energy, leveraging its geographic location and abundant solar resources to become a hub for clean power and green trade. As the Kairouan project approaches completion, it symbolizes a transformative moment in Tunisia’s energy landscape, one defined by innovation, resilience, and a forward-looking commitment to environmental stewardship.
