Uganda has achieved a remarkable environmental milestone: it has been ranked number one in Africa and third globally for its management of wetlands and hazardous chemicals. This accolade underscores the nation's robust legal frameworks, proactive conservation efforts, and enforcement mechanisms.

Covering around 30,105 km², Uganda’s wetlands make up 13% of its land area and are vital to local livelihoods, supporting agriculture, fishing, tourism, and biodiversity. Aggressive restoration efforts began in the 1980s, including bans on large-scale drainage and administrative guidelines to preserve wetlands’ ecological . The nation also benefits from foreign conservation support such as a US $4.3 million climate adaptation project funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment with UN support.

On the chemical front, Uganda’s recognition stems from its proactive regulatory regime and effective controls. While details are limited, the country’s top-tier status signals its commitment to safe chemical use and hazardous waste management Additionally, Uganda recently partnered with Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in a US $90 million initiative aimed at curbing toxic chemical releases particularly persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in plastics.

This dual achievement cements Uganda’s reputation as a regional and global leader in environmental stewardship. It serves as a model for how legal frameworks, international collaboration, and resolute action can elevate conservation and public health standards.
