The University of South Africa (UNISA) has become the first university on the continent to own an airport, a 20-hectare facility designed to support practical training in aviation and advanced technologies. The airport will serve as a hands-on learning hub for students pursuing careers in aviation, engineering, and other technical fields.
According to Vice-Chancellor Puleng LenkaBula, the move will strengthen innovation and equip students with job-ready skills, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The facility is expected to enhance opportunities for internships, research projects, and collaboration with the aviation industry.
The milestone also aligns with UNISA’s broader global growth strategy in research, technical education, and innovation. Analysts say the university’s investment positions it as a regional leader in aviation training and applied technology education, opening doors for international partnerships and industry engagement.
