The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a series of resilience-building initiatives across Chad aimed at strengthening food security and empowering vulnerable communities to withstand future shocks. These programmes span several regions, including Logone Oriental, Sila, Ouaddai, Guera, Kanem, Barh-El-Gazel, Lac, and Wadi Fira, and are designed to reduce long-term dependence on humanitarian aid by fostering sustainable agricultural practices, restoring degraded ecosystems, and enhancing local livelihoods.
Through the PROAGRI project, WFP is supporting small-scale producers—both refugees and host communities—by improving access to cultivated land, providing seeds and agricultural inputs, and developing hydro-agricultural infrastructure. These efforts are intended to boost productivity and ensure more reliable food sources in areas frequently affected by climate stress and displacement. Complementing this, the FCDO project focuses on organizing producers into cooperatives, linking them with advisory services, and encouraging innovation to build more resilient food systems. By strengthening local networks and knowledge-sharing, the initiative aims to create lasting improvements in agricultural efficiency and market access.
The BMZ project adds another layer of support by helping households and communities build capacity to cope with crises. It promotes climate-sensitive farming techniques, water-harvesting technologies, and land restoration efforts to mitigate the impact of environmental degradation. Together, these programmes represent a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of food insecurity in Chad, while equipping communities with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive independently.
WFP’s approach reflects a shift from emergency response to long-term resilience, recognizing that sustainable development must be locally driven and environmentally conscious. As Chad continues to face challenges from climate change, displacement, and economic instability, these initiatives offer a pathway toward stability, self-reliance, and improved quality of life for thousands of families across the country.
