Zambia’s government has firmly responded to concerns raised by the United States embassy regarding environmental contamination in the northern town of Chambisi. At a press conference held Thursday, government spokesman Cornelius Mweetwa assured the public that the affected area had been thoroughly cleaned and treated with lime to neutralize acidity levels. He emphasized that the cleanup efforts were swift and effective, and that the government remains committed to safeguarding public health and environmental integrity.

The concerns stemmed from a US embassy alert issued Wednesday, which warned of “hazardous and carcinogenic substances” in the region following a toxic spill in February. The incident occurred when a dam at a Chinese-operated copper processing facility failed, releasing approximately 50 million liters of acidic waste and heavy metals into the Kafue River. The embassy advised against travel to the area and announced the withdrawal of its personnel from the region, citing potential health risks.

In response, Zambian authorities conducted laboratory tests which, according to Mweetwa, confirmed that acidity levels had returned to normal. The government stated that the danger to human, animal, and plant life had been successfully mitigated, and that the situation was under control. Officials also reiterated their commitment to transparency and environmental safety, stressing that all necessary measures had been taken to prevent further harm.

Mining remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s economy, with the country ranking among the world’s leading copper producers. While mining-related accidents are not uncommon, the government’s prompt response in this case reflects a growing emphasis on environmental accountability and public reassurance. As investigations continue and diplomatic dialogue unfolds, Zambia aims to balance industrial growth with responsible stewardship of its natural resources.
