Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed a new agreement aimed at speeding up the return of Nigerians in Britain without legal status, including failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers, and convicted offenders. The deal was finalized during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the UK and marks a significant step in bilateral cooperation on immigration and law enforcement.
A key feature of the agreement is Nigeria’s acceptance of alternative identification documents, known as “UK letters,” for individuals without passports. This change removes a major barrier that had previously delayed deportations and could affect more than 900 rejected asylum seekers and over 1,100 convicted offenders currently awaiting return to Nigeria.
The agreement also strengthens collaboration between the two countries in tackling online crimes, including romance scams, investment fraud, and cryptocurrency-related offenses. Officials say the deal reflects a broader commitment to improving legal processes, enhancing security, and fostering responsible migration management between the two nations.
